E-liquid is the name given to the solution which is used in the e-cigarette or electronic cigarette. This solution is also referred to as e-juice or smoke juice by some manufacturers.
The e-liquid is a Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG) based solution containing flavourings and 0mg to 36mg of nicotine, which produces a vapor when heated to a very high temperature. The e-cigarette’s atomizer or cartomizer contains a heating filament that heats the VG or PG solution, producing a vapor, which is then inhaled by the user.
Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is derived from carbohydrates of plant oils.
Propylene Glycol (PG) is a humectant that is tasteless, non-toxic, odorless and made from organic natural materials. It is used in many consumer products such as food colouring, cosmetics and as a solvent in injectable pharmaceutical drugs.
Most electronic cigarette brands use a mixture of VG and PG in their e-juice cartridges, the Vegetable Glycerin content being a maximum of 20% and the remaining percentage is Propylene Glycol. The main reason for this is that VG is thicker in consistency than PG.
A thicker e-liquid will not vaporize as well in the e-cigarettes atomizer or cartomizer, and as a result, fewer vapors would be produced during long term use or a regular vaporizing routine.
The e-juice is added into the knib or cartridge of the electronic cigarette and when the user inhales, it is drawn into the atomizer which heats the e-juice to produce the vapor.
A mild side-effect of using the e cigarette e-liquid is a sore throat or dry mouth. This is perfectly normal since VG and PG humectants absorb liquid and as a result can slowly dehydrate your body, especially in your throat where the vapor from the e-cigarette first comes in contact with your body.
The simple solution to this is to drink plenty of water and use throat lozenges until your body gets used to the e-liquid and your vaporizing routine.
The e-liquid or e-juice is available in many different fruit and tobacco cigarette flavours; with or without nicotine added. The amount of nicotine added to the e-juice is between 0mg to 36mg, which is similar amount that is added to nicotine chewing gums and patches.
As we all know, nicotine is a very additive substance so care should always be taken when using an e-liquid that contains nicotine. However, one of the main advantages of using an electronic cigarette with nicotine e-liquid is that you can easily control the amount of nicotine that you receive.
Most heavy smokers opt for a higher strength e-juice containing between 20mg-36mg. It really depends on how many cigarettes you are use to smoking every day, which will determine the levels of nicotine in your body and how strong your cravings will be.
For myself, as a 20-per-day smoker, I found that by using an e-liquid containing a higher level of nicotine, worked the best for me. When I experience an intense craving, I take 7 or 8 drags or puffs from my e-cigarette that uses an e-liquid containing 16mg of nicotine.
If you are considering purchasing an e-cigarette then I recommend that you order a few bottles of e-liquid containing different levels of nicotine and you can also buy e-liquid that does not contain any nicotine.
Also providing that you use the same brand of e-liquid, then you could always add some 0mg liquid to the 16mg liquid to dilute the nicotine content, but you may find that it is just easier to buy a lower level e-liquid.
